An Operating System (OS) is like a cake, some are big and elaborate, others are tiny and simple, with all sorts of size in between. Proprietary OS’s are like cakes you buy at the local supermarket. Commercial open source OS’s are like cakes you buy from a specialty cake shop. Open source OS’s are like cake mixes. Some people are skilled enough to bake cakes from raw ingredients, or build an OS from pre existing components. It’s even possible to grow your own raw ingredients, then bake a cake from those, wich is like writing your own OS from scratch.
Zen programming is not a spectator sport.
