Our ball python Freyja laid a batch of eggs (probably) yesterday! Kate and I count at least 5 that we can see, so there are probably 7 eggs — quite prodigous for a ball python, and a sign that she’s a healthy girl. We had our worries about that because it’s a bit of a drain on a ball python’s health to lay and take care of a batch of eggs, but if she’s produced these healthy eggs then she’s doing alright.

For anybody who doesn’t know the story, Freyja laid some eggs last year and produced 5 beautiful babies. We decided to give her a break after that. However, over the winter the heat bulb in Freyja’s enclosure went out. We didn’t have the money/time to get a bulb right away so we put her in with Bran (our male ball python) so she could keep warm.

And keep warm she did. They didn’t waste much time in mating, which is odd for ball pythons which generally need months of contact and all this tight control of the temparature to ’stimulate’ mating. We were pretty surprised but let them have their fun, thinking that if they did mate for a few days while we waited for a new heat bulb there was a small chance of her getting pregnant. The timing would have to be perfect with her cycle, for instance. Well it was.

Now we just need to find a home for Greyjoy (pictured).
